Abstract: Several aspects of iron deficiency in athletes- specially marathon runners- and the nutritional importance of diet iron to an adequate iron nutriture in this group is revised. Jron deficiency anemia in athletes is related to a deficiency of this mineral in the diet or an increase of the current losses during physical activity. Iron losses can be a result of footstrike hemolisys, perspiration and intestinal mucosa desquamation. Thus, athletes like marthon runners, mainly involved with endurance exercices constitute a risk group for the development of iron deficiency. A poor iron ingestion is considered the main cause of anemia in this group.
Keyworks: iron, metabolism, physical activity, sports, anemia and marathon runners.
